August/September 2005: Transfer of the two Orinoco river dolphins to their new exhibit called “Rio Negro”
A much larger and nicer pool for them, but plenty of worries for the people...
The transfer of the river dolphins from their old pool to their new exhibit was stressing for all persons involved. Special care was taken of the two old dolphins at any moment. These photos shows the vet controlling the vital functions during the descend in the transport stretcher and the release in the new exhibit. The total transport distance was less than 100 m, the operation was completed in 42 minutes.
After the successful transfer: Invited guest Dr. Ernesto O. Boede (right) with Peter Schulz (left), head of the Aquarium including the new Orinoco river dolphin exhibit, and the veterinarians Julia Scharpegge (second from right) and Stefanie Krohn (right) and volunteer Claudia (middle) of the zoo vet clinic of Duisburg Zoo
The two Orinoco river dolphins (Inia geoffensis humboldtiana) clearly liked and enjoyed their new home, a scenic environment like a river in a tropical environment: air and water temperature is 28° C
They play and explore their new environment
